PORVOO CENTRAL SCHOOL

The installation of new energy technology at Porvoo Central School, led by IOTOI Oy, benefits the energy company and the property owner.

More than 90% of the heat energy used by the Central School is now taken from the district heating return pipe using the PIP3-method of the circular economy era. Utilizing return heat decreases the temperature in the district heating network.

According to a study done by the Swedish energy consulting company FVB Sverige Ab, the PIP3-solution improves the scrubber efficiency for a combustion power plant which reduces the fuel demand.

The heating and ventilation of the Porvoo Central School are controlled by COâ‚‚- and temperature sensors. Based on collected data, the automation optimizes the energy consumption according to the actual need, depending on room occupancy and outdoor temperature.

MEASUREMENT RESULTS

Before the installation, Porvoo Central School consumed 1 487 MWh of heating energy and 633 MWh of electricity per year (comparison year 2019) *.

After the installation, 778 MWh of district heating and 305 MWh of electricity were consumed in the Porvoo Central School per year (September 2021-August 2022) *.

The installation has led to consumption savings of around 60 000 euros per year **.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

The PIP3-method also makes it possible to connect waste heat sources to the return pipe. In this case, it is unnecessary to warm up the waste heat to high temperatures of the supply pipe, substantially reducing the electricity consumption of heat pumps. When the return pipe works as a waste heat supply and distribution channel, all the recycled heat reduces the need for combustion in the power plant. The method opens completely new opportunities for modern district heating business models.

* Heating demand / heating degree days for 2019 (Porvoo) = 3666

* Heating demand / heating degree days for September 2021 - August 2022 (Porvoo) = 4005

** Savings estimated according to energy prices in 2021.
